A study paying attention to and understanding who the women from STEM disciplines in Leonardo are and what they do: #ValoreD4STEM – the first study to focus on this theme in companies operating in Italy – offered an opportunity to draw up an identikit of the women workers in the Group who have a degree or hold a professional position in the STEM disciplines. The survey, conducted by Valore D (an association for the promotion of gender balance in the world of work), saw the involvement of 980 Leonardo women. The snapshot resulting from their responses to the survey will help us make the most of their potential and guide our actions aimed at areas for improvement, such as skilling, reskilling and work-life balance.

In a world where science and technology are moulding the future of work (and our lives), we cannot let women lag behind in this area! Though aimed at the development of skills that are much in demand, the STEM disciplines continue to display a major gender gap: in Italy, only 18.9% of women university graduates study STEM disciplines.
The important role played by the educational system in guiding young women toward careers in these areas is clear from the responses provided by those who participated in the initiative (70% of respondents became interested in STEM disciplines during their middle school or secondary school years). This is one of the reasons why Leonardo has a number of initiatives underway promoting awareness of the central importance of these disciplines among young women and promoting scientific citizenship and awareness of STEM disciplines in schools and universities.
